Scott Court: The Before and Afters

Posted by Bryce Wend on September 27, 2011

After seven great years in our home at Scott Court it’s time to move on.  In honor of our very first house I am dedicating this post to the best little starter home a gal could ask for.  When we bought this house it was full of possibilities and we filled it to the brim with a life well lived over the last several years.

Here’s a collection of the before and after photos.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Posted by Bryce Wend on August 4, 2010

Our vegetable garden is finally in full swing!

Here is a shot of it mid-May.

And here it is mid-July.

What a difference two months makes!

Herbs

Our herb section is coming right along.  We’ve got more basil, chives and mint than a family of three can handle.  Last weekend I made this pesto sauce for the first time and it turned out wonderful!  I even froze some for winter in baggies.  We’ll see how it holds up come January.

The mint is growing very well also.  We had to cut it back, it was taking over everything.  Boy does it smell good though!  It made me want a mojito REAL BAD.  But I digress.

Not fairing so well is the parsley and cilantro.  The poor parsley is so pathetic I couldn’t even bring myself to take a picture of it.  And the cilantro, well it was good for like 4-weeks and then it bolted and we couldn’t keep it down.  It kept wanting to flower and seed.  Cilantro turned out to be a pretty difficult herb to grow as far as maintenance goes.  Bummer for me, I love the stuff.  Perhaps a little more shade next year.

Salad Veggies

We’re also enjoying a lot of carrots (Little Finger and Berlicum) and lettuce (Merveille de Quatre Saison).  Not fairing so well are the snap peas.  Some type of white mold took over the plants so we ended up pulling them and replanting this week hoping to get a second harvest of them.

Tomatoes

And then there are these beauties.  Camp Joy Cherries.  My mouth starts watering just thinking about how yummy they’re going to be.

We’ve also got a couple of heirloom varieties, Henderson’s Pink Ponderosa and some seeds we saved from Casey’s coworker Matt Heintz’ family.

There is a slight chance that we are going to have more tomatoes than we can handle in a month or two.  I secretly hope this is the case.

Peppers

We’ve got nine different pepper plants.

Although after the ‘Great Pepper Mix-Up of 2010′ (read: Mason dumped out all the starters from their labeled containers)… I’m not exactly sure what we are going to end up with.

Hopefully mostly sweet (Admiral Golden, Vidi Crimson and Valencia Orange) with a couple of Tam Jalepenos thrown in.

Green Beans

Enjoying the Contender string beans.

Cucumber/Melons

And then there is this…

A hodge-podge of melons and cucumbers growing all over the place.  The sweet melons are Cranes and the Cucumbers are Garden Oasis.  I planted some Lemon Cucumber and not a single one sprouted, which has me stumped, maybe bad seeds?

No fruit from these guys yet, although we’ve got lot’s of flowers and it’s looking promising!

July 25 Harvest

mint, basil, lettuce, carrots, garlic and onions (green and bulb).

How is your garden doing?  Any suggestions on the problems we’ve stumbled upon?

Summer Update

Posted by Bryce Wend on July 24, 2010

Life’s been a little crazy round these parts lately.  Well honestly when isn’t it?  All this business of growing a family (literally) and tending to our careers can be a lot to handle sometimes.

Anyway, I wanted to do a quick update on the summer activities since lookie-there we’re already at the end of July!  This is a total random smorgashboard of photos but sums up our lives (well the fun part anyway) over the last couple of months.  Enjoy!
